Tokyo 2020: The new sports taking a bow at the Olympics

Although one of the great things about the Olympic Games is watching the world’s best athletes smashing records and winning medals, it’s a great opportunity, every four years, for fans to watch other sports they may not normally watch.

Only five different sports have been present at every modern Summer Olympics since the games were resurrected in 1896. They are track and field, aquatics or swimming, cycling, fencing and gymnastics. Although events and disciplines may have changed, all those sports have existed in some form since the first games in Athens.

However, over the years many other sports have come and gone and in the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, golf made a reappearance after a 104-year absence with Britain’s Justin Rose winning the men’s gold medal.

The next Games in Tokyo will again feature some new sports which will be included in the 33 sports which will played across 339 events.

Having featured in previous games, but been omitted in Rio 2016, baseball/softball make a return to the Olympics, which isn’t surprising given the popularity of the sport in Japan.

The four remaining sports to be included for Tokyo 2020 will be featuring at the Games for the first time.

Karate will join other martial arts such as tae kwon do and judo at the summer Gamers for the first time while the 2020 Olympics will also witness competitors going for medals in sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding for the very first time. As well as new sports, Tokyo 2020 will also see 15 new events across existing sports.
