Family Read-Alouds All Ages Will Enjoy

If you are looking for some great reads the entire family can enjoy together, look no further than these books curated by the Unnomedia review team.

Little House on the Prairie

Laura Ingalls Wilder pictorially presents an iconic period in American history, and she’s an excellent preface to reading authors such as Willa Cather. They develop similar themes in more adult terms.

While Wilder deliberately left out the worst parts of her childhood to scare small children, such as the death of her younger brother and the day-by-day recounting of how sister Mary lost her eyesight, she still truthfully tells both about the hardships and joys of pioneer life. You will bite your nails hearing about pa’s fight against the grasshopper hordes and feel his despair at losing his crops two years in a row after having mortgaged everything he owns. You will develop a greater appreciation for how comfortable modern life is and how we moderns squander its bounty with ingratitude. Wilder’s tales of the deep love among her family members their need for, trust in, and dependence upon each other will strengthen your appreciation for and devotion to your own family.

American Tall Tales

If you need to engage the masculine side of your family and love America, you can’t go wrong by reading American Tall Tales. They’re fun for all ages—folks like whoppers just as much now as they did a century ago. Also, of course, they reveal America’s unique personality that so many people love (and hate).

Tokyo 2020: The new sports taking a bow at the Olympics

Although one of the great things about the Olympic Games is watching the world’s best athletes smashing records and winning medals, it’s a great opportunity, every four years, for fans to watch other sports they may not normally watch.

Only five different sports have been present at every modern Summer Olympics since the games were resurrected in 1896. They are track and field, aquatics or swimming, cycling, fencing and gymnastics. Although events and disciplines may have changed, all those sports have existed in some form since the first games in Athens.

However, over the years many other sports have come and gone and in the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, golf made a reappearance after a 104-year absence with Britain’s Justin Rose winning the men’s gold medal.

The next Games in Tokyo will again feature some new sports which will be included in the 33 sports which will played across 339 events.

Having featured in previous games, but been omitted in Rio 2016, baseball/softball make a return to the Olympics, which isn’t surprising given the popularity of the sport in Japan.

The four remaining sports to be included for Tokyo 2020 will be featuring at the Games for the first time.

Karate will join other martial arts such as tae kwon do and judo at the summer Gamers for the first time while the 2020 Olympics will also witness competitors going for medals in sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding for the very first time. As well as new sports, Tokyo 2020 will also see 15 new events across existing sports.
